About Wollongong City Council

Wollongong is the 3rd largest city in NSW and faces many of the planning and environmental issues that major metropolitan and other coastal councils are dealing with as greater urbanisation of the NSW coastline demands increased services in terms of civic development as well as environmental services. Wollongong is a city defined by its coastal topography. It lies between the oldest National Park in Australia (the Royal) to the north, the large coastal Lake Illawarra to the south, is bounded on the east by the Tasman Sea, with the Illawarra Escarpment dominating the western city boundary. Environmental sustainability is one of the fundamental priorities for making Wollongong a place in which people want to live and work. Thus, planning for future city growth, whilst maintaining a healthy local environment, in terms of biodiversity and social well-being, are key to Wollongong City Council’s strategic objectives for the city.
